There is Always a Before was made in 2020, during the political uprisings that occurred in the wake of George Floyd’s murder. Quarantined in the studio, making work and processing the nation’s collective reckoning with American history, Muirhead, from the specific position of a black woman, considers how, why and in what ways the past informs the present.
